Symphony orchestra of Mariinsky Theater to congratulate Armenia on Independence Day

The symphony orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater, supervised by Valery Gergiyev, will perform in Yerevan today. The concert will mark the 20th anniversary of Armenian independence.


Performances will be held at the Yerevan Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiarov. The concert was sponsored by the All-Russian Public Organizations “Russian Armenian Union” and the “Universal Armenian Congress”, headed by Ara Abramyan, businessman, public figure and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. Armavia is sponsoring the concert, ITAR-TASS reports.


Culture Minister Asmik Pogosyan will attend the concert. She noted that the orchestra visited Armenia in 1981-1983. Its conductor visited Yerevan in May 2009.


Gergiyev has received various high honours from Armenia, including the Order of St. Mesrop Mashtots in 2000.


Gergiyev has been the art director of the Mariinsky Theater since 1996. Anastasia Kalagina will perform a Mahler symphony. Narek Akhnazaryan, who performed in Sen Santa at the 14th International Contest of Tchaikovsky, was awarded for the best orchestral concert and audience sympathy. He currently studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire and the conservatoire in Boston, New England. He received the youth award from the Armenian president in 2007.
