Necropolis found in Kabardino-Balkaria

A unique necropolis has been discovered in mountainous areas of the Baksan District in Kabardino-Balkaria. It contains remains of Cimmerians buried in the 8-7th century BC, then Scythians and Alans, ethnographist Victor Kotlyarov told ITAR-TASS.

Another historian, Valery Batchayev, said that information on Cimmerians comes from Homer’s Odyssey. They were forced out by the Scythians in the 7th century BC. They left Crimea to Asia Minor and Assyria, possibly.

Some of them stayed on the Lower Danube and some in the Caucasus. The graveyard contains many items, such as household goods, weapons and armor, jewelry and ceramics.

The necropolis is located near a recently discovered shaft, which had been studied by Nazi Germany’s Ahnenerbe. The discoveries are expected to be used as historic and tourism sites.
