Muslim Magomayev commemoration

Relatives and friends of Muslim Magomayev (1942-2008) will visit the Alley of Honour in Baku to mark the 70th anniversary of the singer. Tamara Sinyavskaya, the wife of Magomayev and a notable opera singer, will lay flowers at his grave at 5 pm local time. Azerbaijani Minister for Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev, businessman Aras Agalarov and others will arrive to commemorate the singer, RIA Novosti reports.

Russian television will broadcast Magomayev’s songs. Flowers will be laid at his house at the corner of Yeliseyevsky Lane and Voznesensky Lane, ITAR-TASS reports.

Magomayev was born in Baku and studied at the Baku Conservatory. The Baku Philharmonic was named after his grandfather. Magomayev became notable after a performance at the Kremlin Palace of Congresses in 1962. His first concert was organized in the Tchaikovsky Hall. Magomayev became a solo singer at the Azerbaijani Theater of Opera and Ballet in 1963. The singer studied at La Scala in Milan. He performed in major cities of the USSR in the 1960s. Magomayev sang in Paris. He became a People’s Artist of the USSR at the age of 31. The maestro has over 600 works, he is the author of over 20 songs and film scores, as well as being an author of shows and a book about Mario Lanza. Magomayev starred in such films as “Nizami”, “The Poet Muslim Magomayev” and “Moscow in Notes”. Planet 1974 SP1 was named 4980 Magomayev to honour the singer in 1997.

Muslim Magomayev died in October 2008 at the age of 66.

Azermarka, a company of the Azerbaijani Ministry for Communications and Information Technologies, released anniversary stamps. The 2nd International Contest of Young Artists was named after Magomayev. Crocus City Hall will host performances of his songs in Moscow on October 20-21. The Charity Fund launched a project entitled “Talents of the World” under the supervision of David Gviniadze.
