Dmitry Medvedev approves idea of announcing 2014 as Year of Culture in Russia

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has supported the idea of announcing
2014 as the Year of Culture in Russia.

The proposal was made by the head of the Federation Council,
Valentina Matviyenko, at a meeting of the prime minister with senators,
RIA Novosti reports.

Mevedev urged for events to be organized as part of the Year of Culture in all
the regions of Russia and stressed the importance of bringing culture
to municipal and provincial towns.
Matviyenko said that culture should become a priority question in
the country and proposed introducing a strategic cultural policy.
On the eve of the meeting, Medvedev met with the Minister of Culture, Vladimir Medinsky,
and discussed with him the national film production. Both Medvedev and

Medinsky talked about reducing the number of filmmakers receiving
support from the government and expressed hope that this measure would
make the Russian cinema industry more competitive.
