Head of the Turkish association of national alcohol drinks Egemen Demirtas has filed a request to the European Commission to register anisette as the national drink, Milliyet reports.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called ayran the national drink of Turkey last week.
Turkey has been producing anisette for over 300 years. It has an alcohol concentration of 40-45 degrees.
