Syrian Minister for Education Hazwan al-Wazz said that Russian lessons in Syrian schools were introduced to fulfill education demands, not political goals, RIA Novosti reports.
He reminded that there had previously been lessons in Russian, German, French and English for a certain period. Implementation of Russian classes will be completed in the 2014/2015 academic year.
The Syrian Education Ministry said in early January that pupils will have a choice between French and Russian as a second foreign language. French was the only second foreign language in high school. About 50% of Syrian teachers of higher education centers speak Russian, so finding teachers to teach Russian will not be a problem.
