This week Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vladimir Dorokhin awarded Azerbaijani authors Natavan Agayev and Azer Efendiyev for their contribution to the promotion of the Russian language in Azerbaijan.
Vestnik Kavkaza discussed the situation surrounding Russian-language literature in the republic with Azerbaijani writers Anvar and Chingiz Abdullayev.
According to Anvar, Russian is now even more popular than in Soviet times. "There are many Russian-language authors, who publish their works mainly on the Internet. The majority of the population read in Azerbaijani, but the Russian-reading audience is also big," he said.
Chingiz Abdullayev underlined that Azerbaijan is probably the only former Soviet republic where none of the Russian schools had been closed. Moreover, Russian is the language of some 18 thousand university students, he stresses.
According to Abdullayev, all learned people in Azerbaijan are still fluent in Russian.
