Russian Deputy Minister for Culture Alla Manilova said that 270.45 million rubles of federal funds had been spent on marking the 200th anniversary of Russian writer Mikhail Lermontov. The funds were spent on construction and reconstruction of Lermontov-associated sites, academic conferences abroad, theatre plays and exhibitions, ITAR-TASS reports.
Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky heads the organizing committee for marking the anniversary. A special medal was produced for the 200th anniversary of Lermontov. The medals will be awarded to Russian cultural figures.
The celebrations will culminate with a gala concert at the Bolshoi Theater on October 15.
Mikhail Lermontov, the head of the commission for culture at the Moscow Public Chamber, a relative of writer Lermontov, noted that he was happy with marking the anniversary. He said that the U.S. Congress had had a Lermontov conference on April 24, despite sanctions. The official added that a memorial of Lermontov had been reconstructed in Pyatigorsk.
Moreover, Mikhail Lermontov drew attention to house N61 on Sadovaya Street in Saint Petersburg, where the writer wrote his famous work “Death of the Poet.” A memorial room was opened in the building.
