The Heydar Aliyev Center held a round-table conference called “Art heritage of M.Y. Lermontov as part of world culture,” in Baku yesterday, followed by a literary concert dedicated to Lermontov’s works. The events were organized by Mehriban Aliyeva, the First Lady of Azerbaijan, the president of the Heydar Aliyev Fund. Vice President of the Fund Leyla Aliyeva, Arza Aliyeva, political and cultural figures of Russia and Azerbaijan also attended.
Anar Rzayev, the head of the Writers’ Union of Azerbaijan, attended the evening's events and told Vestnik Kavkaza that Azerbaijan’s interest in Lermontov’s works was unsurprising. Lermontov, in his words, visited Azerbaijan, studied its language and wrote a fairytale Ashik Kerib based on Azerbaijani folk stories.
Mikhail Lermontov, the head of the Lermontov dynasty, the president of the Lermontov Heritage Association, the head of the Culture Commission of the Moscow Public Chamber, said that the poet had been spreading knowledge in Azerbaijan, he had met with Mirza Fatali Akhundov, studied the Azerbaijani language, wrote the famous Ashik Kerib story. Mikhail Lermontov noted that such works were helping people understand the deep meaning of the partnership of civilizations and multiculturalism.
