The presidential office of Iran will see a meeting of the railway
authorities of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia. Iranian Vice-President for
economic affairs Ali Agamuhammadi will be attending the meeting. The
sides are expected to sign an agreement on establishment of a joint
company within the framework of the North-South railway project, Trend
reports.
The head of the Iranian Railway Department, Abdulali Sahib Muhammadi,
said in a conversation with his Russian counterpart that they passed
laws on the development of railway freightage and simplification of
investment.
Muhammadi said that special attention is being paid to foreign
investments and the activities of the private sector. The plan
involves extension of railroads 2.5-fold, to a length of 25,000km.
Iran is ready to cooperate with the Russian Railways Company.
Muhammadi discussed the Resht-Astara-Astara railway project with the
Russian side. The cooperation sphere includes reconstruction of
railways, switch to double-track lines, electrification of the
Tebriz-Azarshahr line and modernization of Iranian railroads, he said.
The head of the Russian Railroads Company, Vladimir Yakunin, said that
Russia is cooperating with Iran in electrification of railway
branches. Russia may expand cooperation and investments in this
sphere, if Iran so desires.
