In late February, Ashgabat will host an international conference on environmental aspects of the issue of laying pipelines under the Caspian Sea, Trend reports.
This topic is discussed at the governmental meeting, at which President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov emphasized that the conference will be held as part of the country's energy strategy to create new export routes for the transportation of Turkmen energy resources to the world markets.
Berdimuhammedov said the possibility of laying pipelines under the Caspian Sea is among the projects under consideration.
"It is necessary to study the best international expertise and technology in this area so that the construction of offshore pipelines in the Caspian region was safe from the standpoint of impact on the environment," the President said.
In late November 2010, the Azerbaijani and Turkmen governments had agreed on joint international conference on the Caspian environment. The sides agreed on the issue at the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation held in Baku.
Turkmenistan will strengthen environmental assessments of oil and gas projects in the Caspian Sea upon the Presidential decree.
