Azerbaijani has the potential to produce 40 billion KW per hour using rivers, the head of the Azerenergy (company producing and distributing electricity in Azerbaijan) said in a statement published on the official website of the rulling Yeni Azerbaijan party, Trend reports.
Small dams may produce 28 billion KW per hour.
Pirverdiyev said that Azerbaijan may construct 280 small dams with a total output of 700 MW and 3.5 billion KW per hour.
Construction of 36 minor hydro electric plants is the most prospective in the near future.
Azerbaijan continues to construct the Geychey-1, Balaken-1 and Gusar-1 minor dams. Construction of minor dams with an output of 16.3 MW also started at mountain rivers and canals. All the necessary preparations have been made, Pirverdiyev said.
Construction of major and minor dams will by 2015 will allow Azerbaijan to save over 2 million tons of fuel and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.
