WB office in Yerevan compares prices

Jean Michelle Gapi, head of the World Bank office in Yerevan, said that food prices in Armenia exceed the prices in neighbouring CIS states. Prices for bread, eggs and milk are higher, sugar prices are lower, Azg reports.

A spokesman for the Lusakertskaya poultry farm, Manasa Yepremyan, said that the high prices for eggs are due to Easter. They are cheaper than their prime cost. However, she did not reply to whether Armenian poultry farms are operating at a negative profit, News.am reports.

The WB said that white bread prices in Armenia exceeded the prices in other CIS states by 36% in 2005-2010, dark bread – by 33%, eggs – by 23%. Sugar prices in the same period were 10% lower. The prices for oil, meat and macaroni products were at the same level.

Average food prices for all products in Armenia grew by 21% in 2006-2008 and by 10% in 2009-2010.
