EU views Azerbaijan as part of Southern Gas Corridor

Azerbaijan is a link in the Southern Gas Corridor project, the head of the EU office in Azerbaijan, Rolan Kobia, said at the 5th Caspian Oil and Gas Trade-Transport Conference in Baku on Tuesday, Trend reports.

Azerbaijani gas is not limited to the quantity of the second stage of the Shah Deniz field. The country has other fields. European dependence on gas imports will keep rising. The main gas sources for Europe are Russia, Norway and North Africa. Russia is a strategic partner for the EU, Kobia said.

Gas transport through Turkey is a strategic opportunity for the EU. This makes signing of the transit deal between Azerbaijan and Turkey an important achievement.

The Southern Gas Corridor includes such projects as Nabucco, the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the White Stream and ATGI (Turkey-Greece-Italy). The Southern Corridor is a priority project for the EU, aimed at diversifying gas routes and sources of energy to improve energy security.

The conference was organized by Confidence Energy, in cooperation with the Azerbaijani State Oil Academy. Trend provides media support.
