The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project, aimed at joining the Turkish, Georgian and Azerbaijani railroad systems, stipulates construction of 105 km of railway, 76 km of which are due to be constructed in Turkey and 29 in Georgia.The project was due to be completed in 2012, but is now expected to be accelerated and the railway could be ready by the end of this year.
The annual freight capacity of the new railroad will reach 17 million tons of cargo.
