Iran to support Iraq with natural gas

Iraq has signed a preliminary agreement with Iran on supplies of natural gas, to be used to support the country's energy system, Gazeta.ru reports, citing the Associated Press.

The Iraqi government has long been engaged in the restoration of the energy system, which was destroyed after the war. The problem is particularly acute after the events of last summer, when energy shortages provoked the growth of demonstrations. However, despite the billions of dollars that the government has invested in the restoration, the power blackouts still occur in the country.

The contract with Iran for up to five years will enable Iraq to buy 25 million cubic meters of natural gas daily to supply two power plants in the suburbs of Baghdad, a spokesman of the Iraqi Ministry of Energy.
