Sales of Azerbaijani gas to Russia will not affect the Southern Energy
Corridor projects, US Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy Richard
Morningstar said in Baku, Trend reports.
Morningstar explained that Azerbaijan exports gas to Russia in minor portions.
Commenting on the US and European sanctions against Azerbaijan's
Shah-Deniz, 10% shares of which belong to Iran, the US official said
that the issue needs to be handled with care. Using sanctions will
benefit Azerbaijan, because gas will go to Russia and China instead of
to Europe.
Shah-Deniz has over 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves. It is
considered the main source for the Southern Energy Corridor project.
The project is to diversify energy supplies and increase EU energy
security. It includes the Nabucco gas pipeline, the Trans-Adriatic
Pipeline (TAP), White Stream and ITGI (Turkey-Greece-Italy gas
pipeline).
