Iran has started increasing uranium enrichment, spokesman of the
Iranian Foreign Ministry Ramin Mehmanparast said, RIA Novosti reports.
Production increase of uranium enriched to 20% was announced in June,
at the new Fordu factory. Tehran informed the IAEA that another Fordu
uranium-enrichment plant will be built near Kum, 100 km south of
Tehran, in September 2009.
The head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, Fereydun Abbasi,
said that Fordu will have a cascade of 164 centrifuges, similar to the
factory in Natanza.
The USA and a set of other Western states accuse Iran of developing
nuclear arms on the background of the peaceful atom. Tehran insists
that the nuclear program is aimed at meeting the demand for
electricity.
The UN Security Council passed a fourth resolution on Iran,
introducing new economic sanctions. The resolution was passed due to
Iran’s refusal to fulfil international demands and clarify questions
about the program, including its military aspect.
