Azerbaijan is an open transit state, the head of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) Rovnag Abdullayev said, commenting on the EU mandate for talks between the EU, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan on construction of the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline, Trend reports.
The mandate was issued on Monday. This is the first time the EU has offered a deal for support of infrastructure projects.
The gas pipeline will be 300 km long and will run from the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea to the Azerbaijani coast, where it later will be connected with the Southern Gas Pipeline. Negotiations on the project have been ongoing since the late 1990s.
