Israel fears that tensions with Egypt could result in the renouncing of gas deals with Israel. Tel Aviv is searching for a new energy supplier. The only alternative source is gas from Azerbaijan. Current supplies reach Israel through Turkey.
Three gas fields were discovered off the north coast of Israel in 2010. They may provide enough gas for Israel and most of Europe for 20 years. However, the new gas fields can only be used from 2013, while there is need for gas today.
