Укрзалізниця has signed a contract on purchase of 110 locomotives worth $438 million from Georgia’s Elektrovozstroitel for 2012-2016, News Georgia reports.
The first 24 locomotives will arrive in Ukraine by 2012, 30 will arrive in 2013 and 2014, with 26 more in 2014-2016. The deal was signed within the framework of a memorandum on purchase of 141 locomotives. 31 remaining locomotives will also be purchased.
Укрзалізниця plans to renew its train stock in 2012-2016 and purchase 292 electric locomotives from Transmashholding, a company controlled by Luganskteplovoz. Укрзалізниця said that $755 million had been invested in construction of high-speed railways in Ukraine for the Euro-2012 football games. About 9 billion hryvnas will be invested in modernization and construction of facilities, including 5 billion hryvnas as credits to attract Ukrainian and foreign investors.
Укрзалізниця announced mass technical re-equipment and the purchase of 500 new locomotives. 75% of the train stock needs replacing.
