Pigs infected with African swine fever found in Kuban

Veterinarians have discovered an outbreak of African swine fever on a
private farm in Krasnodar Territory, RIA Novosti reports, quoting the
press service of the district administration of Rosselkhoznadzor.

A local veterinary laboratory has identified the genetic material of the African
swine fever virus in slaughtered animals, as well as living pigs, the report
says.

Veterinarians took the decision to kill the livestock in the so-called first
threat zone, which contains more than 2,700 pigs.

African swine fever (Montgomery disease) was first recorded in 1903 in South
Africa. The disease poses no threat to human health, but is extremely
dangerous for livestock.
