New nuclear power plant construction in Armenia is priority for Russia

Cooperation on the construction of the second stage of the Armenian nuclear power plant is one of the priority projects of international cooperation for the Russian Federation, the Deputy Director General of State Corporation "Rosatom", Nikolai Spassky, said in Yerevan, News-Armenia reports.

"We are not only ready, we want to participate. We are ready to participate in financing, the formation of a financial package for the project, and are willing to participate further in the future operation of the second stage of the station," Spassky said.

According to estimates of the Ministry of Energy of Armenia, the project's costs could reach $5-6 billion. In order to attract foreign capital for this project, in 2006 the Armenian parliament abolished the state monopoly on ownership of new nuclear power units.

As previously stated by the the head of Rosatom, Sergey Kiriyenko, Russia is ready to provide more than 20% of the funding for the project, another 20% comes from the Armenian side, and the remaining 60% are expected to be covered by foreign investors.
