Destructive position of West forces Iran to obtain nuclear arms – Andrey Areshev

Iran has held tests on setting nuclear charges on ballistic missiles, the Sunday Times reports.

Israeli special services say Tehran is determined to obtain nuclear arms.

The article notes that a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency will be published on November 9 and will give details on the Iranian nuclear program. Israel is considering attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Israeli and British media reported on military operations against Iran last week. French President Nicolas Sarkozy spoke of the problems and the catastrophe of such movements.

Andrey Areshev, Deputy Director General of the Fund for Strategic Culture of Russia, told Vestnik Kavkaza that the situation around Iran is unpredictable. Such tensions occurred about 2-3 years ago. It is another stage of putting pressure on  Iran. Chances for new actions against Iran are high, the expert says.

He expressed fears that the situation may resemble the events in Libya, where low-enriched uranium was used by the Western alliance. Only its own nuclear weapons would save Iran from attacks similar to those on Libya and the events in Syria. This forces the Iranian authorities to adjust their nuclear program. At the same time, the same reasons are forcing the US, Israel and some other states to plan attacks.

Andrey Areshev believes that the complicated situation sets a hard choice for Russian diplomacy. Moscow obviously cannot follow the old logic of “reboot”. If Iran should be attacked, with special forces or localized strikes, Russia's reputation would suffer severely. There need to be an immediate improvement of cooperation with Iran, including military cooperation to fight off a possible attack, the deputy director general of the Fund for Strategic Culture of Russia concluded.
