Russia, Germany, France and Netherlands launch Nord Stream

Lubmin (Germany) has hosted the official opening of the Nord Stream Pipeline to transport Russian gas to European consumers, RIA Novosti reports.


The opening was held by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Prime Minister of Netherlands Mark Rutte, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.


Russian gas and electricity produced from it will be used by European consumers and improve energy security. The pipeline will be followed by new project, starting from Stockman to development of new fields, Fillon said.


The European Union is the main consumer market for Russian gas. Russia is the main gas supplier. Natural gas will play an important role in the future of Europe, the French PM said.
