Abkhaz opposition concerned by Russian-Georgian WTO talks

Georgian-Russian agreements on international observers monitoring the border along River Psou for Russian membership in the WTO are “a threat to national security of Abkhazia”, the Forum of People’s Unity of Abkhazia said, whose leader Raul Hajimba was a candidate for president, Nasha Abkhazia reports.

Georgia is trying to control borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This causes a precedent for reduction of the independency status Russia guaranteed. Abkhaz opposition does not dispute Russia’s right to join the WTO but bothers about neglect of Sukhumi in negotiating the issue with Georgia.

Georgia approved a compromise brought up by Switzerland, a mediator in the negotiation process. The proposals involve international monitoring of freighting on the border of Georgia and Russia. Details on air and naval freighting will be announced after signing of agreements. Text of the documents has already been initialed and will be signed on November 10. Russia will become a member of the World Trade Organization as soon as the documents come into force.
