Iran’s announcement of a new gas field in the Iranian sector of the Caspian Sea containing 1.4 trillion cubic meters is absurd, head of the Azerbaijani Center for Oil Research Ilham Shaban told 1news.az.
The first exploratory borehole at Shah Deniz revealed 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas, although 400 million were expected to be found.
If the first borehole gives results of 1.4 trillion cubic meters than the real reserves should exceed Shah Deniz 5-6 times. Such statements are agitating and coincide with European states planning to introduce new sanctions against Iran.
Iranian Petroleum Minister Rostam hasemi said on Sunday that a new gas field with 1.4 trillion cubic meters of gas was found in the Iranian sector of the Caspian Sea. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the new field will change the energy and political balance in the Caspian region.
