Second Armenian nuclear power planet must meet international norms - Azerbaijan

The second atomic power plant planned to be built in Armenia should be carried in compliance with the Espoo Convention, an international environmental agreement assessing the impact on the environment, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has announced via its official representative, Elman Abdullayev, 1news.az reports.

"With regard to plans on building a second nuclear power plant, Armenia must act in a spirit of transparency, as the common goal of all countries of the South Caucasus is the environmental security of the region" - said Abdullayev.

During the meeting between Armenian President Serzh Sagsyana and Italian President Giorgio Napolitano last week, the leaders of both countries defined promising areas of future cooperation. Alternative and nuclear energy were named as one of the most prospective directions of cooperation.

The Espoo Convention is an international agreement initiated by the Economic Commission for Europe in 1997.
