Rail transport development is one of the main indicators of the country's advance. It is the most secure means of transport and consumes 8 times less fuel than other types of transport.
Iran has 9,800 km of railways, covering 10% of freight and passenger transport. The 20-year program of 2005-2025 is to increase the coverage to 30% of freight and 18% of passenger transport.
