Turkey sues Iran for violation of gas contract

Turkey has filed a lawsuit against Iran to the International Court of Arbitration for violation of gas contract, Turkish Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said, Trend reports on Wednesday.

The minister added that Turkey will have to file a second claim, unless Tehran reconsiders gas prices. Turkey has already informed Iran about plans for the second lawsuit.

In 1996, Iran and Turkey signed a deal on 10 supply of Turkey with 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually (30 million daily). BOTAS, a Turkish state company for pipelines, said that Turkey imported 39.7 billion cubic meters of gas in 2011. Russia is the top exporter of gas for Turkey, followed by Iran and Azerbaijan.
