Iran electrifies Mashhad-Tehran railway

Iran has started realization of the project to electrify the Mashhad-Tehran railway, Iran News reports.

Nurollah Biravand, Executive Director of the project, said that the main goal is to reduce time needed for travelling and increase passenger and flow and freighting.

The railway is 926 km long. Electrification will reduce time needed for travel from 12-13 to 6 hours.

The first stage will increase the passenger flow from 13 million to 20 million, the second to 50 million. Train speed will reach 200km/h.

The project involves use of special technologies to increase train speed and load capacity. About $4 billion will be spend for realization of the project, about $2 billion for the first stage. Biravand said that it would take about 2 years to complete the project.
