US State Department encourages contracts on Russia’s shipment of helicopters to Afghanistan

The US State Department disagrees with Senators John Corney, Kelly Aiott and Kirsten Jiliband, who demanded the contract with Rosoboronexport (Russia) to be cancelled, RBC reports.

The deal is worth $900 million, Russia is to provide Afghanistan with Mi-17 helicopters. 17 US senators filed a letter to the Pentagon on March 12. Spokeswoman of the US State Department Victoria Nuland said that the contract is to enforce security in Afghanistan.

Senators said earlier that Russia signed a contract on providing Syria with 36 jets. Nuland said on March 2 that the contract would harm the population of Syria. She that the US continues convincing Russia to reconsider deals of the last 10 years, especially in the light of the Homs bombing.
