Turkey plans to begin production of its own tanks by 2017, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz says, Trend reports with reference to the newspaper Timeturk.
"Turkey has always bought tanks that were released in other countries. Even the modernization of existing tanks was carried out abroad. We have decided that Turkey is able to produce its own tanks," Yilmaz says. The minister adds that Turkey is now preparing the necessary infrastructure and expertise.
According to the Deputy Secretary of Defense of Turkey, Murad Bayar, the tender for the production of the first Turkish tank has been won by the company Otokar.
Previously, Turkey announced its intention to expand the program of releasing fighters of its own production. For the realization of this ambitious program, designed until 2020, $20 billion has been allocated.
