Iranian jewelry exports increase by 275% in 2011

Exports of Iranian jewelry and precious metals increased by 275% in 2011 totaling over $667 million, Iran News reports.

14,410 kg of them were sold. The main purchaser was the UAE, some were exported to Canada. The latest statistical data says that about 50% of gold jewelry was smuggled, the figure used to reach 80% in the past.

Iran has a population of 75 million people. It consumes 300-350 tons of gold. Most gold products are produced in Iran by individuals. Manufacturing of jewelry in factories is unpopular.
