The World Bank will issue a loan worth $1.068 billion for construction of the East-West Highway, News Kazakhstan reports.
The sum will be spent on construction of the Alma-Ata – Horgos section of the highway in Kazakhstan. The project is to improve transport efficiency of the Western Europe – Western China (WE-WC) Corridor in the Alma-Ata Region.
The project will improve traffic for 7.9 million people. Modernization of WE-WC is a priority of Kazakh infrastructure development. The corridor runs from Alma-Ata, Taraz, Shymkent, Kyzylordu, Aktobe, to the Russian border, covering 2787 km. Construction of the highway started in 2009. The WB has already helped modernize 1065 km of road within the framework of financing the South-West Highway project.
