Istanbul hosts new round of Iran nuclear talks

Six mediators (five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) and Iran will hold a new round of talks on the Islamic Republic's disputed nuclear program in Istanbul today, Interfax reports.

Russia will be represented by Mikhail Ulyanov, director of the department for security and disarmament of the Russian Foreign ministry.

The sides agreed at the Moscow talks on June 18-19 that the upcoming meeting should be well-prepared. Deputy Secretary of the Iranian Supreme Security Council Ali Bageri and Deputy High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Helga Schmidt, Secretary of the Iranian Supreme Security Council Said Jalili and EU High Representative Catherine Ashton will meet.

Spokesman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said that the Moscow talks achieved major progress.

The six mediators want Iran to stop uranium enrichment of 20% and over, close the Fordo nuclear facility and hand over 20%-enriched uranium in exchange for lift of sanctions.

Jalili urged the six mediators to be constructive. He sent a letter to Ashton, stating that only cooperation can lead to success.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reminded that Iran is ready to quit uranium enrichment of Europe can guarantee supplies of nuclear fuel.

The Istanbul talks are organized right after the coming of the US and EU petroleum embargo against Iran into force.
