US negotiator Ron Kirk said that lifting the Jackson-Vanik amendment and making Russia a fully-fledged trading partner of the US would benefit US business, workers and innovators, ITAR-TASS reports.
Russia will become a WTO member on August 22. The US is unlikely to lift the amendment. The problem causes concern among US businessmen. The amendment limits access of US businessmen to the Russian market.
John Boehner, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, wants to use the upcoming week to prevent an increase of taxes on January 1. Making Russia a normal trading partner of the US would yield economic and political benefits. Voting on lifting the amendment may be postponed until autumn.
