Armenia to help Iran save Lake Urmia

Iran wants Armenia to help prevent Lake Urmia drying up, News.am reports.

Mohammad Javad Mohammadzade, head of the Organization for Environmental Protection of Iran, said that Iran and Armenia had reached an agreement. Armenia will provide water for the lake.

Heat and lack of rain have caused the level of the lake to drop further than at any time in its history. Water will be pumped from Eastern Azerbaijan. Half of the lake, covering over 3000 square kilometers, has dried out, turning into salt fields.

The Tabriz and Urmia districts saw clashes between state forces and people protesting against government neglect of the problem.

High salt volumes have caused some weeds to turn red. Iranian ecologists say that the drought at the lake may cause salt storms.
