Criminal cases initiated over theft attempts in Sochi

Two criminal cases have been initiated over attempts to steal finances for construction of two sports facilities for the Olympic Games in Sochi 2014, Izvestia reports.

The cases started in June 2012. One of the cases was initiated against Mostovik, a company  suspected of trying to steal 2.5 billion rubles by exceeding the true costs for construction of a bobsleigh track.

The second case was initiated for construction of the central stadium in Sochi. Obyedineniye Ingeokom, the company building the central stadium with a capacity of 40,000 spectators, tried to file project documents to Glavexpertiza three times, presenting false documents. The company tried to exaggerate the costs.

The Chamber of Accounts says that costs were exaggerated for construction of a bobsleigh track, ice-skating center, hockey arena and the central stadium. Costs were exaggerated by 17.7 billion rubles. Inspectors blame some high-ranking managers of Olimpstroy. The latter presented all information to the Chamber of Accounts.
