Iran will open Port Astara on the Caspian Sea in two weeks, as stated by Muntasar Kukhsari, head of shipping in the Gilan Province, Trend reports.
The port will have a traffic of 3.5 million tons of cargo annually, starting with 2.5 million the first year.
KAVEH, the Iranian shipping company, signed a contract on Astara construction with Azerbaijan in 2009. Construction should take 5-6 years. About $78 million were invested by the shipping company of Gilan.
Construction of 30 meters of water breakers was completed.
The port will open during the governmental week in Iran on August 23-28. The governmental week has been regular for late August, starting in 1981, when 2nd President Mohammad Ali Rajai, Prime Minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar and three other high-ranking officials were killed.
