1500 students begin summer work on Sochi construction sites

Nearly 1500 students from all over Russia arrived in Sochi to work on the construction of sporting facilities and infrastructure, RIA Novosti reports.

The students have arrived from Kazan, Omsk, Rostov-on-Don, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Khabarovsk and many other Russian cities, as well as Kazakhstan and Armenia. 1500 students were chosen from 17,000
applicants. They will now work in construction teams together with skilled workers.

The President of the Russian Railways Corporation, Vladimir Yakunin, officially opening the summer work period, said, "the student work-team movement is absolutely pragmatic in character. It' s not a game". He said that the aim for the year 2010 is to deploy a mass student Olympic construction. Addressing the students, Yakunin has also warned them that they are to be careful and observe all the rules of safety.

Commenting on the beginning of the students' team-work, vice-premier Dmitry Kozak said that it is in Sochi that the mass student work-team movement is being revived. "For young people it is a good chance not only to contribute to the country's main area of construction, but also to attend a real "life-school", achieve professional experience and earn some money during the summer vacations", Kozak said.
