Head of the Azerbaijani Railways Nadir Azmamedov said on Monday that construction of the Nakhchivan-Kars railway will increase passenger and cargo traffic to Turkey, Trend reports.
He reminded that 20% of Azerbaijani territories were occupied. Cargo is delivered by air or cars through Iran.
Azerbaijan, Georgia and turkey plan to launched the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway at the end of 2012. The railway will start operating at full capacity in 2013. A 105-km branch will be built within the framework of the project. Georgia will reconstruct the Akhalkalaki-Merabda-Tbilisi Railway to increase capacity to 15 million tons annually. The top capacity is planned at 17 million tons annually. The initial traffic will total 1 million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
