The governor of Khurasan-Rezavi, Mahmud Salekhi, said that at a meeting with the head of a branch of the Iranian National Oil company carrying out geological explorations, that a new gas field, with estimated gas reserves of 67 billion cubic meters, had been opened, Iran News reports, citing IRNA.
Salekhi emphasized that support will be provided to the province to speed up the drilling process. Gas supplies from southern regions to the east are not profitable. The governor said that geological projects help abnegate gas supplies from Khuzistan to eastern regions, including the province of Khurasan Rezavi.
Salekhi noted that energy and water resources are primary factors leading to the development of any region. Eastern regions lack water resources. The new energy resources will help the development of Khurasan-Rezavi.
The director of the department of geological exploration of the Iranian National Oil Company, Mahmud Mokhaddes, said that a preliminary exploration for oil and gas in the eastern part of Iran was carried out 50 years ago. In 1968 they found a gas field ‘Khanegiran’. In 1981 they found ‘Gombadli’.
He said that the gas reserves near Meshkhed, called ‘Tus’, are estimated at 67 billion cubic meters. Another gas field was found 20 km away from ‘Tus’, called ‘Tagris-Attar’ where a drilling unit will be built in the near future.
