Chechnya needs up to 50 billion rubles to remove mines

Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev discussed mine-sweeping, an issue raised by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov a month ago, at the governmental session. Plenipotentiary Presidential Envoy to the NCFD Alexander Khloponin added that it would take at least five years to clear 13,500 hectares of land.

The Defense Ministry said that the process will need at least 3 billion rubles. The Ministry for Emergencies said that it would take 10-50 billion rubles.

Khloponin said that the ministry will clear 5,500 hectares until 2015 and 8,000 more before 2017.

Kadyrov reminded about the problems of landmines at a council on development of North Caucasus in Cherkessk. He noted that most people killed and injured by the mines were children.
