European Union and Georgia will sign an agreement on patenting 18 geographical names of Georgian wines today, Business Georgia reports, citing the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
The Georgian wines ‘Khvanchkara’, ‘Cinandali’, ‘Akhaneshi’, ‘Kindzmarauli’ and others will be protected on the markets of the EU from fakes.
Georgian winemakers are happy with the initiative because the fake wine produced in other countries was ruining their image. Georgia reoriented its wine export to western market after Russia introduced an embargo on Georgian wine in 2006.
