Adjara Water – Georgia has initiated construction of the Shaukhevi-Skhalta dam and two more dams in Khelvachauri and Keda.
A 36-km tunnel will be built underground to bring water to the central dam. The three power plants worth $700 million will produce 1200MW.
Georgian NGOs have expressed ecological concerns with the project. Adjara Water – Georgia promised to make new studies of the local environment.
The construction is planned to start in August 2013.
