European commissioner for energy praises selection of gas route

European Commissioner for Energy Gunther Oettinger said that the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) will start transporting 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually from the Caspian Sea to Europe in 2020 via the Southern Gas Corridor.

He reminded that the EU had started searching for diversification of gas sources in 2009. Turkey, eastern part of the Mediterranean, Iraq and other states will gain access to gas via the Southern Gas Corridor.

Oettinger praised Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for persistence when signing the deal on expansion of the TANAP pipeline with Turkey. Shah Deniz-2 gas will reach European markets. The TAP alternative Nabucco West will not be fully scrapped. Interconnectors will allow transportation of gas to Romania, Bulgary and Hungary – three states with only one gas supplier.
