In order to save endangered varieties of apricots a collector's garden of apricots was set up this spring, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Armenia, Garnik Petrosyan, told reporters on Thursday.
"At this point the collector's garden has 62 local varieties, and by the fall it is expected that the number of samples of local varieties of apricot reach 80," Novosti-Armenia quotes Petrosyan.
Petrosyan also said that Armenian farmers have recently started growing imported varieties of apricot, because they produce better harvests that are easier to handle.
The volume of exports of apricots of Armenia this year increased by 44% to 18,200 tonnes, compared to 12,630 tonnes last year.
