Armenia to prolong exploitation of Metsamor nuclear power plant

Armenia plans to consider prolongation of exploitation of the Metsamor nuclear power plant. The Armenian Energy Ministry and Russia’s Rosatom will sign a deal to reconstruct energy blocks of the facility within the framework of the second stage of its exploitation, ANS reports.

The power plant was launched in 1980. Its exploitation terms ended in 1995. Armenia plans to extend the power plant’s lifespan until 2016. Turkey and Azerbaijan emphasize that its operation is a threat for the region.
