Prosieben TV (Germany) has broadcasted a documentary about Azerbaijan’s Neft Daslari, an oil facility in the Caspian Sea, in the Galileo Show. Neft Daslari was built in 1949 and remains one of the world’s biggest offshore oil platforms.
Azerbaijan has 2 billion tons of oil to extract, enough to fulfill Germany’s need for oil for 20 years. About 2500 people operate the facility.
The platform has also been highlighted in one of the James Bond episodes.
Neft Daslari started prospering in the 1960s, though geologists keep finding new oil fields in the area. Its infrastructure is reconstructed and modernized regularly.
The facility has pipelines connected to Baku under the Caspian Sea. Oil is exported to Russia, Georgia, Turkey and other states. Azerbaijan is the seventh largest oil exporter to Germany.
